Yard Work on the Fourth

Spent my 2009 July 4th weekend working in the yard with my family. Last weekend, a tree removal service was in my neighborhood, and was soliciting door-to-door. It just so happened that I had been wanting to have two trees removed in my backyard, since both had grown at a severe angle over my garage. It was only a matter of time before a hurricane-force wind would uproot it, given their top-heavy lean.

To my surprise, my previously shade-heavy backyard was transformed into a sun-bathed one, at least on the side south of my garage. The area now gets about 6 hours of constant sun each day, just enough for a vegetable garden. I now have enough room for three beds (5 feet by 12 feet each). I intend to dig up the previous tree roots and install a brick walkway and frame around each patch, which I'll till using a deep-bed method. I hope to have it done by October 1st, and have my first planting early next spring.

An added bonus: I now have stacks of firewood piled up near my garage. I'm going to wait a month for it to dry out before I split it, but I probably have two winters' worth of wood now. Sweet.
