The NBA's SportVU and EDM's The Glitch Mob

Here's what I learned yesterday:

From an article in Grantland, I learned that in the summer of 2013, the NBA installed a player-tracking system in all 29 arenas that monitors each and every movement of every player on the court. This data compiles distances run, minutes played and player matchups during games. It has resulted in mountains of previously un-analyzed data on basketball skills and metrics. Later this week, two PHd students at Harvard will present a research paper to the MIT Sloan Sport Analytics Conference in Boston, introducing several new defensive player statistics.

From Tim Ferris's latest podcast (Ep #62), I learned that The Glitch Mob, a wildly popular electronic-dance band of three, uses various DIY technologies and a music production software called Ableton to compose and perform all their own music. The band is not affiliated with any label, and self-promotes, self-markets, self-manages and self-creates all of its material. All music by The Glitch Mob is artist-owned, eschewing all dependence on outside agencies or music companies. Most interesting, none of the band's three members have any training in traditional music. None of them are professed to be proficient at playing any traditional instruments.
